Certificate

As a signatory school of the Principles in Responsible Management Education (PRME), the George Washington University School of Business has an obligation to inspire and promote responsible management education. The Certificate in Responsible Management (CRM) is an exciting new program offered by GW Net Impact and the Institute for Corporate Responsibility to allow students to be recognized for their efforts towards promoting social responsibility and environmental sustainability. This certificate program is among the first of its kind among business schools across the country.

The program was established in 2009 by recent GW MBA graduates who wanted to go beyond organizing an oath at graduation, and create a program that enables MBA students to demonstrate their dedication to responsible management, social issues and sustainability. The objectives of the program are aligned with the six Principles in Responsible Management Education, as developed under the UN Global Compact.

Requirements:

To qualify for the certificate, MBA students must complete the following:

  • 6 credit hours of coursework pertaining to the PRME
  • 50 hours of service learning
  • 45 hours extracurricular activities
  • Maintain your own blog, or participate in the group blog

COURSEWORK: These credits can either be focused on CSR, sustainability, business ethics, or any other course that ties to the PRME principles. (See Net Impact’s academic resources for ideas.)

EXTRACURRICULAR: At least 15 hours for each of 3 semesters must be spent outside of the classroom, contributing to a group or club that improves the university community. This is not limited to Net Impact and can be any George Washington University organization, as long as there is relevance to the objectives of the CRM. (See the MBAA website for the most current listing of student organizations.)

SERVICE LEARNING: At least 50 hours total must be spent participating in community service  before March of his/her year of graduation. At least ten hours of the service must be with the same organization. (See Net Impact’s community service resources for ideas.)

BLOG: All applicants must blog about their coursework, extracurricular and service learning in order to share their experiences and establish a dialogue with other applicants and professors. Applicants can either maintain their own blog, or contribute to the CRM group blog.
