GW Recognized for Sustainability Efforts

“The Sierra Club recognized GW as one of the nation’s top environmentally-friendly universities as the campus implements a new minor and Ecosystems Plan.

“The Sierra Club, an environmental nonprofit organization, ranks colleges and universities each year based on how environmentally friendly their campuses are and how much sustainability is incorporated into their mission. This year, GW placed 27 out of 96 schools, its highest ranking ever and the fifth consecutive year of increase, in the Sierra Club’s Coolest Schools rankings.

“GW continues to make progress on the university’s ambitious, yet practicable, sustainability goals related to climate change, water and ecosystems. The Office of Sustainability is working with partners across campus in student activities, facilities, information technology, campus services, procurement, investment and human resources to manage the university’s sustainability impact for the long term. GW has a goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 40 percent by 2025 and its water usage by 25 percent by 2021. The university also plans to become a zero-waste campus. It is possible that the rankings reflect GW’s ongoing accomplishments toward these goals.

“One of GW’s most notable accomplishments for 2012 has been the launch of the sustainability minor with its first cohort of students starting in the program this fall. GW’s operations team is clearly focused on green buildings with five new LEED Gold certifications. The university has also made strides on energy efficiency and renewable energy this past year. The Building Energy Efficiency Program approved by the Innovation Task Force will help the university meet its Climate Action Plan goals by retrofitting equipment in campus buildings to be more energy efficient. The installation of solar thermal panels on three residence halls and the continuation of programs like the Eco-Challenge have contributed to improvements in GW’s sustainability performance.

GWU – Graduate NI Chapter Achieves Gold Status

In June 2012, the George Washington University – Graduate Net Impact Chapter achieves Net Impact Gold Status for the another year running! 17% of over 180 graduate student chapters received this top standing.

We are very excited and proud of this honor and look forward to holding more Net Impact events over the next year!

The Evolving Energy Profile – February 24, 2011

For the third year in a row, the GWU Energy Group and Net Impact will host a conference focused on the business response to many of the most pressing challenges facing the energy industry. Topics will include the role of public policy, factors driving investment in new technologies and resources, and achieving competitive advantages through efficiency and sustainability. A diverse group of executive panelists representing numerous stakeholders will offer valuable insights regarding trends shaping the evolving energy profile. Global demand for energy will continue to increase substantially in the short and long term. The Business Response 3.0 will offer a candid discussion on the most responsible path towards meeting rising demand.

The conference will feature opening statements from Dean Doug Guthrie of The George Washington School of Business, a keynote speaker, three panels, a career fair, breakfast, lunch and a networking reception. All events are open to students and professionals.

Summer Fellowship Program – APPLY NOW

Each year GW Net Impact raises funds to support the Summer Fellows program, which provides grants to help support students who choose public interest internships that are low-paying or unpaid. This summer, GW Net Impact is proud to sponsor two such individuals with grants of $1000 each, at least one of which will be an MPP/MPA student.

Darden Business in Society Conference

The Darden Business in Society Conference is an annual event co-organized by the student-led Net Impact, Energy, Business & Public Policy, and Education Clubs, with support from the Initiative for Business in Society. This year’s theme of “Sustainability and Innovation” will explore how leaders are using business principles to develop innovative solutions to social and environmental challenges.

Event keynote takes place Thursday, February 2nd with sustainability and energy panels Friday, February 3rd.
